According to the U.S. Census Bureau, there are over eighteen million military veterans in the U.S. at this very moment. Of those veterans, around forty thousand go without shelter every night. This highlights a great need in our community to help our veterans.

Facing these numbers, it may feel daunting even to try to make a difference. But remember, even the smallest act of kindness can make a big difference. And when several small acts of kindness combine, they can become something extraordinary. Here are a few ways to help support veterans in your community.

Volunteer

One of the most significant ways to make a difference for veterans in your community is by volunteering. Several organizations could use your help, such as local V.A. facilities. Alternatively, you can volunteer with Hire Heroes USA, which helps veterans, active members, and military spouses find jobs. The volunteer work is entirely remote, making it the perfect opportunity for anyone.

There are hundreds of little ways that volunteers can make a difference. For example, if you sign up to volunteer through a V.A. facility, you may be asked to provide transportation for vets in your area.

Fight Veteran Homelessness

As mentioned above, over forty thousand veterans currently lack homes or shelters. You can help by fighting against veteran homelessness. This means helping to protect them again foreclosures, evictions, and other concerns. Do so by adhering to advice from the National Coalition for Homeless Veterans. Additionally, try to support local homeless shelters and their initiatives. This will help everyone in your community, including homeless veterans.

Spend Time with Wounded Veterans

Nobody enjoys spending time in a hospital, but the experience can feel much worse when you’re lonely. This is why we need to take the time to visit wounded veterans. Look into your nearest V.A. facility to determine their visiting policies.

Provide Help to a Veteran

All it takes is a small act of kindness to make someone’s day. If you know of a veteran in your town that could use a little extra help around the house, consider stepping up and doing so. You can help them with their groceries, home repairs, chores, and anything they need that you feel comfortable doing.
